Recently, the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission issued the notice of the evaluation results of the 2021 Shanghai Key Laboratory. The Shanghai Key Laboratory of Modern Optical System, led by Academician Zhuang Songlin of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, ranked first in the field of information and was rated as excellent. This is the third consecutive time that the laboratory has achieved excellent results, following two rounds of evaluation in 2014 and 2017.
The evaluation evaluated the overall operation status of the laboratory during the three-year evaluation period (2017-2020) from the aspects of research results, tasks undertaken and research funds, awards, team building, talent training, open communication and operation management. After two rounds of strict screening, 4 laboratories, including Shanghai Key Laboratory of Modern Optical System, were rated as "excellent", 16 laboratories as "good", 3 laboratories as "fair", and 2 laboratories as "rectification". Shanghai will provide financial support to key laboratories of "excellent" and "good", encourage further optimization of laboratory construction and development measures, and give full play to the supporting role of the construction of Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Center.
Approved by the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission in 2006, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Modern Optical System is a provincial and ministerial key laboratory focusing on optics and closely intersecting and interpenetrating with information science, precision machinery and manufacturing, computer science, microelectronics technology, material science, life science and other disciplines. Under the leadership of Academician Zhuang Songlin, director of the laboratory, many national and provincial scientific research platforms such as the National Basic Science Center, the 111 Intelligence Introduction Base, the Collaborative Innovation Center jointly built by the province and the Ministry of Education, and the Engineering Center of the Ministry of Education have been established based on the laboratory, as well as talent training bases. The laboratory has more than 80 fixed personnel, including more than 10 national talents and more than 20 provincial and ministerial talents. The laboratory carries out research in ultra-precision optical manufacturing (new methods), terahertz science and technology (new band), nanophotonics (new mechanism), ultrafast nonlinear optics (new mechanism), medical optics (new application) from three levels: basic optics, optical imaging and spectroscopic technology. In the past three years, it has undertaken 86 national-level scientific research tasks and more than 80 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, with a cumulative contract fund of more than 170 million yuan. He has published more than 500 SCI papers, including more than 300 in the top 5% of the optoelectronic field, 13 in Nature, Science sub-journals, and more than 60 articles in Area 1. A total of more than 240 invention patents have been authorized, of which 7 have achieved the transformation of achievements in the form of equity investment, with a cumulative fund of 49.69 million yuan. He has won nearly ten provincial and ministerial science and technology awards such as the first prize of Shanghai Technological Invention Award and the first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award.
In order to promote the construction of the laboratory, the laboratory will always adhere to the docking of the international academic frontier, face the major strategic needs of the country, undertake major tasks, and deepen international cooperation. Further optimize the composition structure of the talent team, promote the interdisciplinary integration, and strengthen the breakthrough of major key issues such as subversive, leading and "stuck neck" technology. While supporting the construction of the Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Center, we should also prepare for the reserve force and useful supplement of the national key laboratory.
